Working over 30 years as an art
appraiser can be equated with a lot of experience. Beyond experience
is a thorough approach to the job. Probing beyond the artist's
exclusive dealer response of "no, it's not by him/her", it has been
possible to prove otherwise. Early on I was mentored by Donald Vogel,
who taught me to "see" inpainting without a UV light and to
scrutinize an artist's treatment of anatomy in assessing copied
paintings. The infamous Marty Gordon schooled me on 20th century
prints by the modern masters Picasso, Chagall and Miro. Call it
immersion or obsession, the challenge of doing the work well
continues.
